Sennheiser aims to shape the future of audio through the creation of unique sound experiences for its customers. As a third-generation family-run business, Sennheiser are equally proud of its over 75-year history, past accomplishments, and innovations in a constantly shifting industry. Fritz Sennheiser started the company in 1945, with the venture initially founded in a farmhouse near Hanover. Fritz Sennheiser soon developed fast-growing business opportunities, utilizing the knowledge and skill set that he attainedd in his prior scientific career to respond to a high demand for measuring devices and microphones.
The MD 82, the first shotgun microphone, was created in 1956. Shortly after, At the beginning of the 1960s, Sennheiser began, in earnest, research and development in the field of condenser microphone technology, a bridge to further applications in recording audio for film sets and TV studios.
In 1957, a wireless microphone system for professional TV use was introduced, developed in partnership with NDR. This wireless system was marketed alongside Telefunken from 1958 as “Microport”.
In 1960, Sennheiser introduced the MD 421 dynamic microphone, a most popular item still manufactured and sold today. The MD 421 II continues the tradition of the MD 421, one of Sennheiser's most popular dynamic mics for over 35 years. The large diaphragm, dynamic element handles high sound pressure levels, making it a perfect choice for the recording of both guitars and drums. The MD 421's full-bodied cardioid pattern and five-position bass control combine to make it an excellent choice for most instruments in addition to group vocals or radio broadcast announcers.
In 1968, the HD 414 was launched, the world's first open-back headphones, which remain the bestselling full-size headphones of all time. The HD 414 is a high-quality, dynamic open air headphone which excels not only by its balanced and natural sound impression but also by its very slight weight. This lightness is due to two small but powerful transducer systems, each of which is capable of a frequency response of 20 - 20000 Hz.
The HD 25 headphones changed the DJ game in 1988. Originally conceived as professional monitoring headphones, they were also used as high-class in-flight headphones on board Concorde, before going on to conquer DJ booths the world over. In 2013, Sennheiser marked the 25th anniversary of the HD 25, revisiting and celebrating the history of these legendary headphones.
The evolution microphone series started a revolution in 1998. It was closely followed by the evolution wireless microphone series in 1999. Up until this very day, a wide assortment of the world’s biggest stars are proud to use Sennheiser’s evolution microphones – an undeniable success that Sennheiser celebrated when reaching "20 years of evolution" in 2018.
In 2000, the MKH 800 was the world’s first studio condenser microphone to cover the whole frequency range of all new digital audio formats with just one transducer system. Its follow up, the MKH 800-P48, set a brand new standard for studio microphones in the age of high definition digital recording. It is the very fist microphone to fully utilize the wider frequency response and dynamic range of the new 24 bit/96 kHz standard, marking the breakthrough to a yet unknown clarity and precision in audio.
