Crown
There were humble beginnings for what is now an internationally respected leader in amplified sound. Crown Audio Inc. was started as the International Radio and Electronics Corporation (IREC) by an Elkhart, Indiana minister named Clarence C. Moore in 1947. Moore did not start his operations out of a garage as is the norm but he began by building open-reel tape recorders out of a chicken coop. Much progress has been made over the decades and Crown is now known for being the creators of industry leading amplifiers for all types of applications including cinema venues, installed sites, touring rigs, portable PA, as well as commercial audio. With nearly seven decades of innovating and providing extraordinary audio experiences, it’s not surprising that Crown Audio continues to raise the bar in audio amplification year after year.
The early days of IREC focused on a family of rugged, compact open-reel tape recorders built for reliability and to travel in remote, often-primitive regions of the world where missionaries operated. Several models of tape recorder followed before Moore obtained a patent in 1949 for a revolutionary invention: the world’s first tape recorder to come stock with a built-in 15-Watt power amplifier. Fifteen years later, IREC produced their first ever solid-state amplifier, the SA 20-20. These new innovations brought great success to the company and amplifiers became the focus of future business.
Tragedy struck in 1971 when a fire destroyed over 60% of the IREC facility with he remainder of the plant severely damaged. Moore was determined to continue building and evolving. Production resumed in less than 2 months with the latest in a line of game changing products, the D-60 amplifier.
IRECs co-founder, Ruby Moore, suggested a name change to coincide with the company’s new focus. The early days saw branded tape recorders such as Royal and Imperial. Continuing with the theme, Ruby’s idea as to simply call the company Crown. In 1975, the stockholders voted for the name change and Crown International, Inc. was born.
Crown was acquired by Harman International in March of 2000 and continues to be an industry leading light with numerous innovative design breakthroughs including the DriveCore Install (DCi) series that was released in 2013. Featuring both analog and Network amplifiers for the installed sound market, this series using just one tiny chip to replace over 500 parts makes it the most reliable and innovative amplifier on the market today. These amps embody the reliability and innovativeness that have long been Crown’s hallmarks, delighting customers with products that consistently exceed both specifications and expectations, even on the most demanding tours and installations. DriveCore technology seamlessly integrates the amplifier drive stage into the power output stage fusing everything into a chip the size of a dime. The foundational DriveCore circuitry is based on breakthroughs by Crown's own Gerald Stanley with five patents applying to the advanced feedback, modulation and output stage technologies.
Solotech is proud to be an authorized dealer of Crown’s full line of amplifiers. Our knowledge sales staff, trained regularly by the experts at Crown, are happy to help guide you through any questions you may have or challenges you may face.
